Zhustin has successfully completed his Master’s degree in Architecture at the University of Manchester—an impressive milestone that reflects his dedication to both academic excellence and the future of architectural design.
Reviving an Industrial Heritage: A Vision for the Future
The project brief challenged students to develop a design for a new institution of technical education, with a focus on community integration, sustainable development, and adaptive reuse. Zhustin’s proposal stood out for its thoughtful blend of modern architectural techniques and a deep respect for the site’s industrial heritage.
The Old Crewe Works—a symbol of the town’s rich railway and engineering history—served as the conceptual and physical foundation for the project. Zhustin’s design envisioned a campus that not only facilitates advanced technical learning but also revitalises the surrounding area, making it a hub for innovation, collaboration, and cultural engagement.
Key features of the proposal included:
– Adaptive Reuse of Existing Structures: Integrating preserved elements of the original rail works into new academic and community spaces, creating a tangible link between past and future.
– Sustainability-Focused Design: Employing passive solar design, green roofs, and renewable energy systems to ensure the university operates with minimal environmental impact.
– Community Integration: Incorporating public spaces, workshops, and exhibition areas that invite engagement between students, professionals, and local residents.
Zhustin’s project received high commendation from faculty for its clear vision, technical sophistication, and sensitivity to the site’s history and urban context.
